M8 Connectors target automation applications

Offered in 3- and 4-pin female and 4-pin male versions, M8 Connectors can be used to build flexible I/O connection on circuit boards. When connectors are plugged in, protection rating meets IP67 in accordance with IEC 61076-2-101 standard. Insulator is high-temperature-resistant plastic and suitable for soldering with all SMT soldering procedures. Users can choose SMT, press-fit, or through-hole reflow termination.
ERNI, a leading supplier of PCB connectors, announced today it is offering new M8 male and female connectors designed for automation technology. The first products will be 3- and 4-pin female connectors, and a 4-pin version of the male connector. These connectors can be used to build a flexible I/O-connection on the circuit board. By employing surface-mount technology (SMT) termination, ERNI is enabling customers for the first time to consistently miniaturize their field devices.

Standard Interconnect Geometry The interconnect geometry complies with the IEC 61067-2-101 standard. When the connector is plugged in, its protection rating meets IP67 in accord with the IEC 61076-2-101 standard. The traditional range of applications includes connecting sensors and actuators in automation technology. Now, however, the space-saving M8 connectors are also being used for power-supply and bus connections where M12 connectors or others are too large. Unlike the M12 connectors, M8 connectors are coded only via the contact arrangement.

M8 Ruggedness the M8 connector's terminal connections have been made so robust that it is possible to feed in bulk material packaging using an appropriate vibration device. The connector has also been designed for tape-on-reel packaging. As a result, despite their relatively high installation height, it is possible to mount the male and female connectors automatically using today's automatic placement machines and feeders.

Universal genius of M12 connectors

Size M12 connectors are used in many areas - today they are the standard when it comes to connection systems for plants and machines. With the new power connectors from the “M12 Power” series, the application areas have now been expanded to include the power domain (Figure 1).
In recent years, control technology has advanced at a rapid pace. The requirements on the control components, but also on the connection systems, have changed significantly. Devices are becoming more compact and at the same time the electrical interfaces are expected to fulfill more functions. This trend is also having an impact on M12 connection systems. Originally having just 4 positions, connectors for new applications in sensor systems are being successively expanded up to 17 positions. M12 connectors have been upgraded to be capable of data transfer rates up to 10 Gbit/s, which means that they can also be used in Ethernet-based environments.

Reasons to use M12

Figure 1M12 connectors can now also be used for power applications.
With these innovations, M12 connectors have made the transition from being pure sensor connectors to becoming today's leading universal connection system for sensors and actuators as well as for fieldbus and network technology. The wide acceptance of M12 connectors comes also as a result of international standardisation. New pin assignments are being included in the standardisation process at an early stage - this means that connectors are compatible worldwide and users enjoy a high degree of reliability.
New connection concepts are also required as electronic devices are becoming increasingly more compact, and the power demand is simultaneously increasing. The demands placed on connection systems for motors and drive solutions are also changing. Here, the connection system must be compact and flexible, so that it can fit into often restricted spaces. Economic aspects also play a role in this context as the connection system has a significant impact on the overall costs - especially for compact motors with integrated electronics.
Phoenix Contact developed the new “M12 Power” connector solution to connect compact motors and devices. The product family extends the M12 concept to allow the connectors to transfer power at 630 V AC and a continuous current of 12 A. As a consequence, a gap has been closed so that users can now use M12 connectors across the board for transferring signals, data, and power.

Safety as priority

Figure 2: M12 connectors for line voltages have a protective conductor connection, leading PE contact, as well as grounded knurled screw.
The connectors from the M12 Power series are mechanically coded. This prevents M12 Power connectors from being accidentally inserted into a "normal" M12 sensor connection. The clearances and creepage distances of the connectors correspond to the specifications laid down in the standards for classic power connectors. The products that are designed for line voltages have a protective conductor with leading PE contact (Figure 2).

High power rating and small size

The new power connectors are designed for supplying devices in different application areas. They have 4 power contacts with T coding for DC low-voltage applications up to 63 V and 12 A (Figure 3 - Left). They have 3 PE power contacts with S coding for AC applications involving line voltages up to 630 V and 12 A (Figure 3 - Right). As a consequence, the M12 series has been expanded to include two additional codings, allowing it to address many new application areas. With a diameter of approx. 16 mm, the product dimensions still correspond to the usual, compact M12 design.
Figure 3: T coding and S coding: T coding is for low-voltage connections up to 63 V - to supply power, for example, to fieldbus components, passive distribution boxes, power supplies, or small motors with continuous currents of up to 12 A (left). With the S coding, line voltage connections can be established up to 630 V at 12 A for compact distributed components via M12 connectors – for example, motors, frequency converters, motor-operated switches, or power supply units.
In automation technology, compact devices that are used in harsh environments generally have cables equipped with M12 connectors. The connection for the device supply was always a weak point. If the power rating of the M12 connector was not sufficient or, for safety-related reasons, a separate coding was required for the line voltage, then a conventional larger power connector had to be selected, to the detriment of compact device dimensions.

The new M12 Power connectors have now solved this problem. They offer device manufacturers significant cost advantages, as the high design and production-related costs incurred up until now when using both M12 and larger power connectors are a thing of the past. A unified M12 solution with sensor, data, and power versions simplifies the mechanical design as a result of the compatible dimensions when designing devices with M12 technology. In turn, this allows devices to be produced at lower costs.

Users also profit from the standard handling of M12 connectors, which are equipped with the Speedcon quick locking system from Phoenix Contact. In installations where space is extremely restricted, all of the device connectors can be quickly and reliably locked by just twisting them through half a turn.

New application areas

Figure 4: The 360° shielding protects the power connectors from EMC interference.
M12 power connectors also fulfill the requirements relating to compact, flexible, and cost-effective power connectors, resulting from the miniaturisation of drives and distributed cabling. M12 Power connection systems make a lot of sense, especially for devices with small mounting dimensions and operating voltages up to 630 V, but which "only" require currents in the range of 12 A. A 360° shield design protects against EMC interference (Figure 4).

New concepts for supplying power to distributed devices are possible also in the low-voltage supply range below 63 V by using the 4-position M12 connectors. These types of devices include fieldbus modules, valve islands, and power supply units in the IP67 environment. The 4-position DC version allows two independent DC supply circuits to be configured, each rated at 12 A. As a result of the 1.5 mm² conductor, this arrangement permits higher currents to be conducted with a lower associated voltage drop.

Summary

The M12 transformation artist has once again proven that it can comply with the ever-increasing demands in automation technology. For the first time, a connection technology is available for sensor, data, and power exclusively using M12 connectors. This new function supplements the universal, basic properties including simple handling and a high degree of ruggedness. As a consequence, M12 connectors have all of the features that will allow them to continue to establish themselves in important application areas; for instance, in drive and building technologies, infrastructure, and outdoor applications.

M12 Power Connectors feature T-coding to prevent mismatching

Camarillo, CA - Binder-USA introduces the first official line of M12 power connectors with T-coding. The Series 813 connectors use the standard M12 locking thread, but feature a new coding or key to prevent mismating with other M12 versions. Other modifications of the M12 connector have been made in order to increase the maximum rated current, cable and wire size. With these changes the connectors are now even more suitable for power supplies in automation technology.

The T-coded M12 connectors have four gold-plated contacts, which allow a wire cross-section of 1.5 mm2 or 16 AWG wire, and can transfer up to 12 A at 60 V DC. With these new changes the field-attachable connectors now accept cables between 8 to 10 mm in diameter. When fully mated and locked the connectors are IP67 rated ensuring protection from liquids and debris.

Currently the male and female field-attachable connectors are available with a plastic housing and die cast locking ring. The mating panel-mount connectors are made of nickeled die cast zinc, and feature a M20 x 1.5 fixing thread for mounting to a panel.

Other versions of the T-coded M12 power connectors are planned to be released in the coming year. With specific minimum quantities requested by the customer cable assemblies using the new design can be manufactured.

M12 Connectors are available in 12- and 17-pole versions

New high-density M12 connectors from Phoenix Contact provide more I/O points than traditional M12 sensor/actuator connectors. The circular connectors come in 12- and 17-pole versions.

This high pin count allows M12 device connections in applications where space must be conserved, such as medical equipment, robotics, printing machines and industrial cameras. The typical panel cut-out size is only 11 mm, and even in this small footprint, the rugged M12 connector meets IP67 requirements.

The high-density M12 connectors are available as molded cordsets and extension cables, as well as panel feed-through or PCB mounted receptacles. They feature Phoenix Contact's SPEEDCON technology, securing with only half a turn. They operate across a wide temperature range and are available in plug or socket versions.

Network Communications Modules come with M12 connectors

Available for PROFIBUS RT, PROFINET, DeviceNet, EtherNet/IP, Modbus TCP, and EtherCAT, Anybus CompactCom modules with M12 connectors enable network connectivity for machinery that operates in wet, dusty, or other demanding industrial environments. Protection ratings of IP20 and IP67 apply, respectively, to modules with and without housing, and all CompactCom modules are completely interchangeable.

HMS Industrial Networks now releases a series of Anybus CompactCom modules equipped with M12 connectors. This enables network connectivity for machinery whichoperates in wet, dusty, or otherwise demanding industrial environments. Networks are initially PROFIBUS, PROFINET, DeviceNet, EtherNet/IP, Modbus TCP and EtherCAT.

Enabling IP ratings up to IP67
Just as the standard CompactCom modules, the new M12 versions will be available with and without housing. The M12 version without housing makes it possible to achieve a protection rating of IP67 (IP = Ingress Protection). This means that the product is completely sealed from dust and can resist water. The CompactCom M12 versions with housing are IP20 rated, just as the standard CompactCom modules with the default fieldbus connectors.

“We see companies standardizing on M12 connectors for various reasons,” says Stefan Källström, Product Manager, and Embedded Solutions at HMS. “Some use it because they provide a sturdy and secured wire connection, while others need to reach higher IP rating since their machines operate in wet or in dusty environments. With the new M12 connectors, we enable device manufacturers and end users to get access to the most common fieldbus and industrial Ethernet networks and still maintain a high IP rating“.

Built on proven technology
The Anybus CompactCom modules with M12 connectors offer the same functionality as standard CompactCom modules, including complete interchangeability between modules. This means that once the Anybus CompactCom concept is implemented into a product, it is possible to just plug in any CompactCom module to get access to the targeted network.

Dual-Mode Access Point includes IoT Gateway functionality with M12 connector

Supporting point-to-multipoint connectivity with several slaves/clients simultaneously to 10/100 Base-T Ethernet network, RBE221s Bluetooth Smart Ready Access Point follows Bluetooth Spec v4.0 and depending on connected device, wireless range can be up to 300 m. Unit supports Personal Area Network User and Network Access Point as well as generic Bluetooth low energy GATT-based services. It can be configured via physical configuration buttons and indication LEDs or web interface.

connectBlue has today added Internet of Things (IoT) Gateway functionality to its Bluetooth Dual-mode Access Point RBE221s which is also referred to as a Bluetooth Smart Ready Access Point. Whenever the RBE221s now is connected to the Internet via Ethernet, any web application running on a web server can be used to access data in Bluetooth low energy (Bluetooth Smart) devices connected to the access point.

With the introduction of IoT Gateway functionality in the Bluetooth Dual-mode Access Point RBE221s, the RBE221s can now allow for web applications to – via HTTP commands – simultaneously access any Bluetooth low energy device. The RBE221s is a Bluetooth Smart Ready Gateway which means that it can use the standard Generic Attribute Profile (GATT) to access any Bluetooth low energy (Bluetooth Smart) device.

“Internet of Things is the hottest topic right now and the potential is huge; predictions span from 25–50 billion IoT devices by 2020,” says Rolf Nilsson, CEO of connectBlue. “But in order to fully utilize the IoT architecture, you need a Gateway to get access to the Bluetooth low energy sensor nodes and this IoT Gateway is now added via our Access Point.”

connectBlue customers are found in demanding wireless applications in the industrial and medical industries. A popular application for the IoT Gateway in an industrial application would be to, for instance, read temperature data from various sensors via a web interface on a commercially available device such as a smartphone. In a medical application one can, for instance, access real-time data from various patients’ heart rate monitors in customized web applications on any internet connected web device.
The Bluetooth Dual-mode Access Point use M12 connectors for waterproof connector. M12 connectors can ensure a tight connection and keep Ethernet connections from popping loose in high-vibration applications, such as in moving vehicles.

M12 Connector is offered in 4-pin version with D-coding

Shenzhen Signal Electronics, a leading provider of M12 waterproof connectors from China, has now expanded its range of M12 automation connectors to include a 4-pin version with D-coding. These connectors can be used to implement a flexible input-output (I/O) or field-bus connection on the circuit board. M12 connectors with D-coding are meeting Industrial Ethernet standards (IEC 61067-2-101, Amendment 1).

Standards compliant

M12 connectors are now recommended for nearly all field-bus specifications, and meet the IP67/IP68 protection standards rating (IEC 61076-2-101). They are also traditionally used to connect sensors and actuators in automation systems. An expansion (Amendment 1) of the IEC 61076-2-101 standard describes a 4-pole, D-coded variant specified for a higher protective class of Industrial Ethernet applications. From the perspective of transmission technology, these requirements correspond to those of a Category-5 modular jack (RJ45) connector, according to the EIA/TIA standard. The D-coding prevents the connector from being confused with the A-coding used for sensor-actuator wiring, or the B-coding used with some field buses.

Modular design

The connectors' modular design concept makes it possible to produce connectors in different sizes and versions. Customers may choose the desired connection technique (surface mount [SMD], press-fit, or through-hole reflow [THR]). The black insulator is made of high-temperature-resistant plastic and is suitable for soldering with all the usual SMT procedures. The M12 connector's contacts are so robust that a vibration device can be used to feed them in bulk-material packaging. Tape-on-reel packaging is also available.
